How are pupils assessed in PE?

Pupils are assessed at the end of each activity block. They receive a grade for their effort, quality and behaviour. They will also be assessed against National Curriculum Levels, which range from level 1 to level 8.

Throughout KS3 pupils assess their own performances and formally record their thoughts. They are asked to write down at least one clear target for the next time they participate in that particular activity. This aids teacher planning and assists pupils in focusing their efforts in lessons.

How are pupils grouped in PE?

  • In Year 7 pupils will be taught in mixed ability single sex groups.
  • In Year 8 & 9 pupils are taught in single sex groups. They are split into Group 1 (higher ability) and Group 2 and 3 (mixed ability). This allows teachers to plan effectively for their groups, with pupils progressing at an appropriate pace in their lessons.
