Mother

Vsevelod Pudovkin (1926)

 

Mother  recreates the abortive Russian revolution of 1905. The title character is the unwitting cause of the imprisonment of her political-activist son Pavel. This causes her become awakened to the horrors of the Tsarist regime and she joins the Bolsheviks who plan Pavel’s escape. When her boy is killed in the escape attempt, she picks up the symbolic red flag and stands up to the Tsar’s charging cavalry. She too is killed but dies a martyr for the Bolshevik cause.
